I’ve been on the hunt for P-40 tag material for a LONG time. There’s just not a lot of Warhawk out there – especially material that isn’t suitable for a restoration. We acquired this piece of P-40 wing in late April from a private collector and are so pumped with how this tag turned out.
The P-40:
Renowned for its exceptional maneuverability and reputation for inflicting heavy losses on enemy aircraft, the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk is an iconic American single-engine, single-seat, all-metal fighter-bomber extensively employed by Allied forces during World War II.
First taking flight in 1938, the P-40 boasted robust construction, formidable armament, and one of the highest maximum dive speeds among early war fighters. It served as the principal USAAF fighter aircraft during 1941–42, engaging Japanese forces at pivotal locations such as Pearl Harbor and the Philippines in December 1941, and distinguishing itself with the legendary Flying Tigers in China during 1942. On August 14, 1942, a P-40 pilot achieved the first confirmed USAAF victory over a German aircraft in World War II, marking the beginning of numerous successful engagements with Axis forces.
Despite being outpaced and less agile compared to some adversaries, the airframe gained recognition for its unparalleled ruggedness and resilience in combat.
Our P-40 Wing Skin tags are offered in 5 variants (Greens, Reds, Raw, Silver, and Black) plus a Warhawk set. The Greens feature the most exterior paint and are the most striking tags of the bunch. These are very limited and are the lowest serial numbers. The Reds feature varying amounts of a reddish/brown exterior paint. Some are fully covered in paint, but most have fragments of original paint. Some of these have bits of yellow and green paint on them as well. Like the Greens and Reds, the Raw tags were cut from the outer wing skin but are mostly devoid of paint. Some are totally raw, and some have small areas of paint. The Silver tags were cut from the underside of the wing where the aileron was located. These are the thinnest tags, and a few have very small bits of original paint. The Black tags are the only variant cut from internal structure. These are the thickest and most limited tags of the release. All tags are laser etched.
The Warhawk set includes one of each: Greens, Reds, Raw, and Silver. There are only 10 sets available.
There were only 155 tags cut from this wing panel, and we expect them to go quick. LIMIT OF 1 OF EACH VARIANT PER PERSON… so the most any single person can purchase is 5 tags.
These tags pair excellent with the pop art card by Ryan Quickfall.
