The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang first flew in 1940, having been developed in 102 days. The Mustang was initially developed for the Royal Air Force and was later used by the US Army Air Forces as a fighter and to escort bombers on raids over Germany during WWII. The Mustang was used by Allied Forces in multiple theaters during the war, and later used by the United States Air Force during the Korean War. The P-51 was replaced by jet aircraft in the US, but the type remained in service with multiple foreign air forces into the 1980s. More than 15,000 P-51s were built.
